Throwing this out here since theres a tecumseh section on this forum. I have a 1972 Sears Eska 3.5hp air cooled outboard engine that is being a royal pain in the ass.

When I first brought it home it would start ok and idle (albeit rough) but would break up under throttle horribly and would not rev up. Now I've screwed around with this damn thing for hours to no avail. I cleaned the carb, replaced the coil with plug wire, replaced points, and condenser.

Now at this point it hasn't gotten any better and has actually gotten a little worse. It only makes spark randomly when it feels like it.

The magnets in the flywheel seem ok, the gap between magnets and magneto seems ok, the flywheel key is intact. Plug is new.

Does anyone know any diagnostic procedures that could help me out or common problems with these engines ignition systems?

could be the coil and or spark plug wire, sometimes the plug wire breaks where it meets the coil on the inside. some 2 stroke lawnboys used to be that way.

Magnets and magneto faces clean? Choke plate /throttle plate working properly?
Other than point gap being adjusted where, like high spot on a lobe I,m stuck.
