flaking plated frame

#1
I have a old sears or wards chrome plated frame that the plating is coming off in spots. Has anybody had plating removed at a plater? Wondering how much it costs. I once saw a article on home removing plating with some rebar in a tank with dilute muriatic acid but then the solution would then contain chromium which is very toxic. Any ideas?
Tthanks for any help.

my suggestion is leave Chrome plating to the experts with the right equipment and the good commercial liability policy's, you don't want to go there! If you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, have it powder coated with the chrome finish. Check out Jdogg's bike.

You cant powder coar over the chrome and in addition it is flaking so that has to go. Either I go to a plater or try shot peening with small shot to knock the chrome off. I don't think the home removal with acid is an option due to the toxic nature of the acid when done.
