Just rinse it out with water before welding like you had guessed.. Once the fuel vapors are gone.. Whats it gonna do? :shrug:

the trick to working with exsplosives is understanding them if you dont completely understand the worst thing that could happen and how to prevent it then dont work with them at all

For the record, years ago we would solder or weld tanks fairly often. Our trick was to empty the gas then dump in a quart or so of alcohol. Slosh that around for a bit, dump then rinse with water. Alcohol mixes with gas, water mixes with alcohol. When you are done just reverse to remove the water. Never had a problem.
