Rebuild old 6hp engine

#1
I was told by a small engine repair place that the motor would need about $200 worth of work. They had said that the motor had loss some compression. Where do I start to rebuild this motor? And find parts?:hack:

It's a model 14 Briggs. They're about the same size (outside dimensions, not engine capicity) as a more modern 8HP Briggs. There probably aren't a lot of rebuild parts available for them anymore but the shop you've been dealing with should be able to let you know for sure. You can also get the parts manual on the Briggs site and enter the part numbers for prices and availability.

just to add to your reply........again depending on how old it is....... you can get racing parts for the 8hp through Arc or G-team racing. They have billet every thing for the 8 hp. Also if you look at the side of the block you will/should find 2 bolt holes. The blocks were molded just the same as the bottom shaft electric start 8 hp. If you have a flywheel with the ring gear and the charge ring you can make the side shaft electric start. Hey just a thought.
