no need to remove the bearings at all.A few lock washers will work. That way the outside diameter wont be so large. Or if you have an odd ball piece of tubing and can make a square cut use that. Just an idea. The AGK link about says it all posted by thibault116. You have about an inch of thread to work with if I remember right, so you have a lotof room for error. Good Luck!

I just took a look at my DB and it looks like there's a 1/8" gap at the top as well at the bottom, I would try a flat washer and grind the outside diameter of the washer to match the outside diameter of the steering head...put a little grease on each side and you should be good to go.
