TAV Max HP and RPM?

#2
Kevin, I'm using a china clone and I have no idea what horse power or rpm but I would say more than 9h but I am not running 7000 rpm at least not all the time

I would look at the Comet 44 C driver system it is rated for higher RPM and Horsepower The do sell the 40 series now in a bolt on Like the 30 series. Comet cost more because of where it's made USA

Way back in my yester years I had a Tecumseh big block 8 engine in a off road Kart I built and I used the Comet 40 series clutch system and it had what is needed most ( BELT WIDTH ) I think your worried about the Rpm too much. To cover the horse power you need belt grip and proper alignment along with realistic gearing. The Comet 44C is just more tunable for the engagement RPM

Yes I do need grip ...
I had my stock VT-8 out on some wicked hills and the 30 series was doing all it could to move the bike. The belt was smoking!

I have this hot rod Tec and want to do a VT-8 style bike ... I prefer a TAV so that's where these questions are coming from.
Researching before spending.

I don't think RPM will be an issue but if you guys know of something that fits my needs I don't want to overlook it.

I would likely have a respectable cover/scatter shield over it ...

I run a tav 30 on a built clone and it works fine. On my drag bike and my newest fox I run salsbury 330 which were used for Jr dragsters. Very tunable but you have to have all the different weight arms and springs. The driven has multiple holes to increase/decrease shift RPM.

The 330 led me to the TC340 which looks like what I want ... but I cant find belt info ... what comet belt series is it compatible with?
GTC 340 Series Torque Converters : Gokart, Minibike, Jr Dragster, Industrial, Garden

Damn Ole4 you are a cornucopia of TAV knowledge!

David Wulf was burning Comet belts with high RPM operation. I forget which bike and which link he's commented on that. The belt was getting hot and sticking to the sheaves at high RPM, and affecting performance. You might shoot him a PM and ask about that.

Thanks Dave, I just shot him a PM to please check out this post and give me his input.

The application I'm thinking about would be a VT-8 with the Tec H50 Motorsports motor (9hp) to bomb around in the woods ... I don't think it will see much of the 7000 RPM in that application ... but it will see it on occasion!!
Speed is not the goal.
Mostly I want to twist the throttle and have the belt not slip with 300lbs of me on it going up and down steep hills.
So grip is more important than RPM.

 I think you'll be okay too. I'm running a Comet belt on a Tote Gote (mini gote) with a Raptor and routinely spin an estimated 5K plus. That's a heavy bike, and I have had zero problems. Ole4's experience with the 30 series pretty much nails it though. I think Wulf was running "very" high RPM in more of a drag bike, balls to the wall kinda deal.

Thanks for the mental image of a VT-8 roaring through the woods at 7000 RPM! LOL! We'll need some video of that please.

Kevin I think a 30 comet would be fine for what you want to do . We tried a 30 setup on a Honda limited mod that would run past 9k and it sling the belt almost off the clutch and just didn't work .
My brother run one of the cheap plate setups on a Briggs raptor that will run out to 5,800 and it works fine , although has has since installed one of the comet blue , white springs in the driver which puts the engagement to around 2,500 , now she wheellies off the line .
I would run the comet 30 or 20 setup and try it , you can always add the yellow spring to the driven , it holds the unit closed longer and helps with greater RPM 's .

Thanks for the input Dave ...
I'm a bit gun shy on the 30 series.
I weight near 300 lbs and was out riding some steep hills on a VT-8 with a New Chinese 30 series TAV and Driver with a Comet belt. It was slipping and smoking.
I also have the same set up on one of my Hilltoppers.
My other Hilltoper has a Comet Driver and a Chinese Driven with a Comet Belt.
I use nothing but Comet Belts.

Other than the TAV slipping and Smoking on that one occasion I have had Zero problems.

But I want to build a VT-8 with a 9 hp motor that may very well get tweaked for more HP .. potentially up to 18 hp or so ..
I want a TAV that will hold up the 7000 RPM and HP I could throw at it down the road.

The 30 series is only rated up to 8 or 9 HP
