Will a bad fuel cap gasket cause failure?

#1
My 6.5 has been unreliable lately. Runs great for a minute or so and then just quits. It usually starts right back up but does it again. I took the carb off and found a tiny bit of junk in it, reassembled and it did fine for a day. Now I am back to the same thing. I think I read somewhere where it is important to have a good seal on the cas cap? Mine is torn in two places. When I am extra carefull reinstalling it it doesn't seem to have the problem. What do you think?

Thanks!

The gas cap has three jobs, 1. keep the gas in the tank. 2. keep dirt and water out, and 3. allow air pressure (vent) to equalize. If it doesn't do one of any of these three things, you will have problems.

you got it backwards. you dont need a gasket. you dont even need a gas cap. you have to allow air to enter your fuel tank in order for the fuel to exit into the carb.
