2015 Build Off Open Class- RoadMaster75- Gilson Swing Arm Chopper

#22
Yeah…… Mr. Gilson is spinning in his grave!

But, no choice….. the front end was demolished and the stem had to come off….

This way the frame lives on …….! Most of the front end and rolling parts used on this rig were found on a
motorbike junk pile (s); (except the front rim off of a 1980 Suzuki RM80).
Still haven't gotten a positive ID on the seat pan; which is now upholstered.

Fired it and drove it tonight!

Threw a rear sprocket chain …. rear chain tensioner eyebolt on right side got pulled straight out!
Will re group and repair….. but, it does drive smooth and is really comfy. Hemi Predator started on the FIRST pull!!!
WHite Knuckle Scrramble….here we come!

Thanks Fellas! Much appreciated from such a great bunch of folks!

This was fun although still a few little things to do; rear brake cable (front works great!),
and, a bit of lighting for those moonlight rides.

This bike (and the other two) will be going to Div. 3 NHRA meets this summer to serve
as pit bikes for our team…. So, they'll get used and put to the test!

Ok….Here's a May 12 Update to this build.

- We made up some machined, stainless axle/chain adjusters for the rear. They're octagonal in shape to
fit the back of the swing arm. (The originally installed 5/16" eyebolts back there got pulled out straight after applying the mighty torque of the Pred!

- Got the 50 Buick Roadmaster tail light mounted such as to fill in the space under the ducktail of the seat.
Also, I took out the innards and placed a 6 LED bicycle tail light inside the housing…. so it lights up now!

- Replicated the Gilson foot pegs in stainless for this build…. waiting for the rubber covers to get here.

- Rear brake cable had to fabbed up from parts since it's SO long. Custom swiveling stainless cable terminators ( as pictured)
were made up for front and rear brakes.

(The extra pic is of my 51 Chevy panel truck…. it will be the conveyance to the White Knuckle Scramble in July. All three
minis will fit nicely in the back cargo area)

Left to do….
extend kickstand, find a suitable headlamp, inevitable paint touch ups, and learn how to upload a video!

Final post OldMiniBikes BuildOff-2105 Gilson swingarm chopper

OK, Here's the pic finished, the pile of parts pic, and a link to the
video clip.

Had a great time doing this and learned a lot in the process.

Credits to my good friend, Bill, ("Mr. Precision") for many of the parts
and his services as "crew chief & head machinist" on this project

Got another Gilson waiting in the wings for a build, but it will have it's original front end in tact this time!
