big porting
jet sized to .038"
UNI filter
straight pipe

I previously had a problem where I could not accel past around 30mph when I had been doing 50ish easily. I deemed this problem to be the increased airflow from recent porting so I opened my jet up and that solved the issue and all has been fine for a while since then.

All of a sudden my engine decides to have this squeak/clatter noise to it which I cant tell where it's coming from and it sputters its way up to the normal 50mph that I was able to reach before. Took the side cover off and theres no metal shavings or loose parts. If I hit the throttle too hard the engine completely kills as if it is running WAY too rich and it cant ignite because it doesnt even fire intermittently. Funny problem because with the problem before of jet needing to be richened up from porting, the plug was covered black even when it was "lean". I can accelerate slowly and avoid this problem, but then I lose all of my low end torque from being able to mash the throttle like I used to.

Very confused as to whats going on with this engine.

A few other things to ask as well. Does anyone know a guess at what my compression would be with a flat top piston and .015" milled head? What octane should I be running with this combo? I've been using between 89 and 92 octane and dont notice any difference between the two.

you should be running premium with the flat top and milled head.

the noise could very well be from your clutch.

as for the sputtering, make sure the jets aren't plugged at all. since it's ok if you accelerate slowly, that could very well be the problem.

to me it sounds like one of two things, 1) your oil didnt hold up and your connecting rod bearing is scored and needs to be replaced. or 2 your porting was too much and now you dont need much jetting to carb, i would check bearing , if ok fill with syn oil and go two sizes smaller on the jets! good luck should be easy fix:smile:
