'72 Arctic Cat Whisker - head gasket question ?

Where exactly is the head gasket located ? Is it at the top most section of the engine ( 4 bolts hold it down ) or is it lower where it tapers into the carb area ? I don't recal seeing a gasket when I removed the top most portion to inspect the cylinder head ... this may be my low compression problem ? I'll custom make the gasket if required. Please advise.
