Dang Spring forks... I NEED HELP

#1
So I have an early Manco Thunderbird project with the front end with the springs. I took the bike apart and had it sandblasted. I put the front end back together and noticed 1 side is like 5/8" longer than the other. The longer side is as if it needs to twist more and compress the spring but there is no way. That spring is as tight as it is gonna get. I have tried adjusting the little clips on the forks so that more of the first coil of spring can be comnpressed but I still need to rotate the fork alomst 3/4 of a turn to make it the same length as the other.

Is there a trick to these front ends? Does the 5/8" matter" When I put the axle in and tighten down the forks will be "forced" to the same length so does it really matter? Any thoughts?
