dragging clutch?

Process of overhauling my mini. When I test it on a downhill coast, engine off, sometimes it feels like a brake comes on and there is a loud howl coming from the engine/clutch. Is the clutch shot?

Maybe your chain isn't aligned correctly? Or either your clutch bushing might be worn? Or it might even be the chain grinding on something?

There shouldn't be any drag on that engine through the clutch if you're just coasting downhill...the outer clutch body should be free-wheeling because the internal shoes aren't being 'thrown' outwards to engage the outer hub. If it is engaging, or 'dragging', I take the clutch apart to clean, inspect and lubricate...especially the bushing. This also shows wear of the bushing, causing wobble, which can cause dragging.
