dumb question

the flatheads are the older style motors that a lot of people run. the Honda GX/clone motors are OHV.

google it and you'll find some explanations.

here's my old 4hp Tecumseh flathead:

All of the vintage minibikes came with flatheads, or 2-strokes. They're preferred for a restoration to keep the originality or the vintage look. They work better in some frame designs too.

Simply the greatest motor to ever be produced

The Briggs and Stratton 5 horse, Model 13 flathead, is really easily customizable and can be built by anyone to produce 10-15 horsepower.

The flatheads sadly are no longer in production, but because of the fact they have been being made since the 60's and the Briggs 5 horse, was used for karting there are hundreds of thousands out there and parts are still readily available

Over head valve (OHV) engines differ from the flathead by having the valves in the top of the clyinder head, they produce more horsepower than a flathead (for same displacement) but do have there drawbacks (valves can float and hit piston if governor is removed)

Over head cam (OHC) engines are the same as an OHV but have the camshaft above the cylinder head instead of in the block.

2 strokes, have no valve train and can run at high rpms, they have around double the power of an equal size displacement four stroke, but lack low end torque and can be rather finicky ( some 2 strokes do have power valves and or reed valves, rotary but do not have to be mechanically controlled by a camshaft)

There are a few more exotic types, like the wankel rotary, and a few opposing cylinder designs but these are non-practical and expensive for minibikes

Hope that helps a little
