Emulsion tube

A buddy gave me a gc 160, cleaned up the inside of the air box and around the carb. Is it essential to use the emulsion tube? Does it act as a fuel filter or a fuel regulator. I did not note where it went, does it go inside the fuel line entering the fuel pump?

The emulsion tube goes inside the carburetor. Yes, you need it.

I may be talking about something else. This did not come out of the carb. It was inside one of the black rubber hoses about 2" in lengh. The engine seems to run fine without it.
