I've always used the yellow teflon tape. The white stuff seems too thin. They make sealants for this purpose, but the tape is less messy and can be easily cleaned off if you need to remove it for some reason

I never use teflon tape...makes me think of plumbing a toilet. I use a teflon liquid from Loctite. Don't gob it on and it will look cleaner and seals great!

I'll be damned, I didn't know you were supposed to put anything on those threats. Whenever I take a petcock off a tank it doesn't seem like there's anything on there. I always thought that little gasket at the end was enough.
