Garage Sale Sears Mini Bike - My First

Hello!

I picked up my first mini bike at a garage sale yesterday and I'm trying to learn more about it.

It's a Sears Roebuck and Co

Model Number: 391-80950
Serial/Code Date: 2523

Does anyone have a manual/more information? It has a Tecumseh Motor but I haven't taken off the cover yet to identify the motor.

It turns over but will not start.

It's a Sears built by Manco. There should be numbers stamped into the shroud to tell you what size the engine is. HS-??

Thanks! I will take a look for the engine code later this week but from what I can it looks original to the bike (4hp Tecumseh).

I was hoping to find a service manual, model name, build date, and picture or the original ad if possible. I haven't been able to find much info so far, but I did find the part list with part numbers on searspartsdirect, although the vast majority of the parts aren't available:

Does anyone know what the orange wire is that goes back to the seat? Did someone just try to wire in a tail light?

So I found the engine codes after wiping down the shroud!

Engine Code: HS40-55515H
Engine Serial Number: 1295B

So it looks like the engine was manufactured in year 1 of a decade... so would you think 1981 for this engine/bike?

That serial dates the engine as a 1981, since it's a square shroud. 71 would have been a riveted tag on the side of a round-shroud

I have identified the bike as a 1981-82 Sears Roebuck and Co. "Scrapper"
