What's the best trail bike?

The Japanese minibikes like the Z50 and the MT1 were made for the trails. They have transmissions with gears to tackle the hills and decent suspensions for their time.

That's why they are called "MiniTrails".

Those modified Rupps look awesome though and I bet they romp in the dirt.

this i think is a great "trail" bike that still retains alot of mini bike characteristics. Its really not much bigger than a bonanza sized bike, still pretty light nice seating position etc.. If I actually had somewhere to go ride I would not have gotten rid of mine, it would have been the bike I would have built "for me".
