Filter fell out

#1
I Have a home made filter on a 5hp briggs flathead with the in tank carb set up.
My son went on a long ride and the air filter must have come off and is missing.
The engine is sputtering now. Where do you think a piece of dirt/grit would lodge in the carb first after going thru the air intake?
will probally go thru the whole thing and replace the diaphram too!

dirt will go straight to the valve and then piston....

I'd try a new plug first....then go from there, clean carb, check valves to make sure one didnt get bent from sucking a stone and lodging between the valve and seat..

With no air filter on that engine carb will be out of adjustment.

I'm with Rivet. Depending on how restrictive the filter was, the carb was adjusted to run well with the filter. In choosing a new one, try for the least restrictive one possible. Then adjust the carb, and you and your son should be ridin'.

Will do. Made a carb out of a 1.5 inch PVC end cap. This one was very flat on the end and somewhat deep. I'll get more filter material and design something to hold the filter in. I Want it to look ok or I'd just run a bolt thru the middle of the PVC cap to hold the filter in. Still thinking
Suggestions?

Mini, you can glue a small piece of pipe onto the the endcap, get another cap, drill holes or cut slots and pressure fit it to the pipe you glued to the base. Measure the pipe just long enough so both caps just about touch each other and it should look pretty good.
