As long as its got some end play .010 to .040 I'm fine with, and some karter's / engine builders use more than one side cover gasket to get what end play they like.
I would shim it up. I don't like to see the crank moving back and forth. I build a lot of animal race engines for my go karts. I got my recommendation on end play from one the best animal builders in the country. I haven't had one blow up yet. I turn my engines 7500+rpm burning methanol.
I would suggest checking end play with the engine cold and then again at full operating temperature. If it opens up when hot, then it can be set tighter when cold and vice versa.
