Metal Finish, need advice

Awhile back one one you guys suggested mixing acetone with something for a finish on metal, I think it may have been linseed oil.
It worked great and I need to do it again, can you refresh my memory?

What I am looking for is a finish that will harden but not look shiny, that I can put over some rusty metal and tin that I cleaned up.

Wouldnt a matte polyurethane work?

Thanks Jdogg, it would but it's to hard of a finish.
I am putting it on some tin ceiling panels and the poly will chip off over time, I ve also had issues with it yellowing.
