Stock HF 6.5 Toughness

#1
A buddy of mine has a Baja Doodlebug minibike that he recently put a 6.5 HF motor on. Its a blast to ride but the throttle is really annoying since we just hooked it up to the throttle lever and not the governor arm. It pulls hard but in the top end just kind of hums and cruises not very fast. We took a GPS and got it to go 40 mph by reaching under and pulling the governor arm. By bypassing and pulling the arm what RPM's are we reaching. We have read that the HF engines are stable up to 5500 RPM without any modifications. Is it safe to hook the throttle up to the governor and will the crappy cam keep the RPMs low enough to ride safely or is he going to have to get a billet rod before he can do this safely. Again this is a BONESTOCK motor.

Thanks for the help,
Ben

Welcome to the site! Stop reaching down and pulling on the arm unless you want to kill yourself! And hooking the throttle to the arm will be squirly and like an off and on switch rather than a throttle! I as well as some other members have a simple fix or trick to achive the same effect but under a controlled action! See the thread titled Piggyback Ride in the honda/clones section of engines and modification forum. It will better explain this picture................

Or you could do it this way, I do not use the arm of the governor. This is how affordable go cart website shows it done. See how the rod off the carburetor is shorted and connects to the throttle arm. no more governor. I will eventually remove governor and buy a billet rod and fly wheel as i modify the engine, but for now it is a stock engine with a header.

minibikedude if you have no connection to the governer arm at all then you might just as well remove the thing! You are already freed up to about 5500RPMs with no connection to the governer at all till you float the valves! Our friend here is looking to engage the governer arm without reaching down to do so I think! But hooking the throttle cable to the gov. arm is scetchy at best and gives full throttle too quick IMO! My spring trick gives you the best of both worlds, my engine still starts on the first pull and idles fine without jumping forward from having to give it gas to start! It is as if I did nothing at all till I reach the point where the governer kicked in prematurely and surged when I tried to adjust it out! Now it never sees that place, just continued forward momentum till I am done! And it is less than a buck and takes minutes to do!

Thats the same way I got mine hooked up on my Boonie. Runs awesome ....couldn't be happier with it. You just gotta loosen the throttle arm up a tad so its not so stiff.

I myself do alot with karts and 5hp Flattys but can the Clones take the abuse of WOT without getting a rod shot up your @$$?
Honestly I would want a pupose built clone with the best of everything! If not a honda built the same! The box-stock classes are the fastest groning segment of kart racing, and lifan builds most of the engines under different names, the HF 6.5s are out there as are the red and yellow units all lifans I believe! There are many classes from straight box stock to spec built units for different classes! My cousins are kartrace fans and love the clone racing, they are excited to come visit and ride the clone powered minibikes!

I do not have any connection to the governor. I had the same problem on these new clones with a jerky governor. So I bypassed it. Adjust your Carburetor idle screw and it will start on the first or second pull every time. I had no problem with starting on both mine clones that are set up the way in my picture. I will remove the governor when I buy the billet Rod/flywheels and gaskets for the engines, but for know this work, When I ride, I pin the throttle on take off until i,m up to speed and the clutch is fully engaged and run with throttle about 1/4 to 1/2 open at cruising speed with the occasional fully throttle blast for a minute. Like GTO says. I do not like to be governed. I do not either.

Haha ill stick with my flattys right now. They sound so much cooler,, unless you do some of the crazy $h1+ that minidragbike does. Every single one of those things just sound disgusting. I bet most of them have a lot of money in em tho.
