I agree with both of you. I'm just not crazy about the disk brake ('68) Rupps. Besides that -- I know they can be found for much cheaper if you're patient enough

And a few other things as well. But the fact remains that not everyone can restore a bike to that level, yet they still would like to have an icon . So they buy it when it becomes available. Same is true in the classic car market.
It's nothing new really, about ten years ago there was a guy restoring them and his regularly fetched $3-$5K, and his gas tanks went for around $800 or so...
