broken fin repair

Has anyone tried repairing broken fins on a cylinder head before? Have any advice/suggestions on how to do it? I have the broken pieces, and they match perfectly, with no small parts missing........ If you have and thoughts, plese Let me know, all ideas are appreciated.

What head are you working on? I normally replace the head. But, on a Clinton I had I was unable to find a head so I ground down the fins by the one that was broken, and staggered the height of them and it looked great, a few people I showed thought it came that way.

It was on this engine, If you look you'll see the fines are lower by the front. Even when I point out what I did no one sees it.

actually....... its for a outboard boat motor. Posted here instead of off topic because i figured I would get more responses. I'm sure I could find the parts, but would end up paying more then the whole things worth.

unfortunatly my fins broke at the bottom, so grinding it down is not an option.

Can you get in with a burr and cut the fin out? Your only other choice is to have it built up with weld and reshape it.

If you have the broken part try using JB weld

ssscat, Regular JB Weld will only withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees. The JB Kwik Weld will only withstand 300 degrees. Ogy

what does the head temp get? reg. jb weld should work.

I am willing to bet that it will not make a difference on how the outboard runs if the fins are there or not :shrug:

If I'm remembering correctly; back in my go kart days; we used head temp gauges and the redline was 600 degrees. Now that was on a Rotax two stroke. Not sure about four stroke. Ogy

Is the engine air or liquid cooled?
