Wheel Truing Stand (from old parts)

#1
Several times, I have removed the spokes from a 10" wheel, repaired or had the wheel chromed, then laced the spokes, and trued the wheel on an old axle stuck into a vice with a sharpie marker for indexing.

On this latest 10" wheel for a Cat "Wildcat," I just could not get rid of the wobble. So I fabricated a simple stand made from old mini bike parts. The uprights are from a Stellar frame piece, a thin engine mount from some other project, a piece of scrap angle iron, and two axle spacers.

This incorporates the Starrett Dial indicator, part number 670241 used on Tecumseh timing. (Any dial or digital indicator would have worked) The only difficult part was building a holder for the indicator that fit snuggly. Also tapped it for a thumb screw in 10-24. (Thumb screw is a Briggs electrical terminal screw)

This works so MUCH better than my axle/vice method, and I can sit in a chair, drink a beverage, and slowly tweak the spokes in (and out) and get it really close to straight. A must at a blistering 26 MPH. Hey, these bikes need all the help they can get, running smooth.

This works on 10 and 12 inch wheels. (Rims)

Love it. I used to do motorcycle wheels using a home made stand but when I had to disassemble and reassemble the small spoked mini wheels I just bought the China Freight stand and added a plate for the dial indiacator. Works great but yours looks much sturdier.

Amusing was right! Anyone can make this, or one much better. They also sell them pretty cheaply. Just did it on a lark, realizing that axle in the vice thing was way too stressful, because my sharpie markers were dried out. This also gave me the opportunity to play with the feed and heat settings on my MIG as I remain a rank novice welder.

That is why I used the Hammered "Crap" spray paint! To hide the welds. I've also doubled the use of my overpriced Tecumseh timing tool!

Heck Freddy, good to see you here as well! Thanks to all for the nice comments, and yeah, those are some POOR welds, but there is no JB Weld on them. :grind:

It's just a TOOL. Like me. LOL....

Havasu Dave- Moving on....:scooter:
